Klev ut paa balkongen en natt.Jag hajade till, där stod nagot stort.Saag ut som en väska. Ett yrvaket huvud tittaden upp. En jättevraak !. Gick in och hämtade en hamburgare, men han lyfte när jag kom tillbaka. Var nog paa genomresa till AFrika där de övervintrar.

En kväll satt jag paa balkongen. Kände naat paa foten, där satt en stor kackerlacka.
Försökte sparka bort äcklet, han kämpade sig fast först.

Han sprang sen mot dörren, Jag fick tag i en sopkvast och ställde mig imellan. Det imponerade honom inte.
Jag gjorde ett dragskott med honom saa han flög över till andra sidan balkongen.
Han spang emot mig igen.
Nu lag jag av ett slagskott saa det sa "sack" när han slog i väggen.
Nu tänkte han till nagon minut och kröp sen under blomlaadan.

I förrgaar var det dags igen.När jag kom hem paa natten satte jag mig och slog paa tv.

Daa kommer han utspringande fraan mitt sovrum, som om han ville säga: Vem i helvete väcker mig mitt i natten!!

eller: Vem faan är inne i mitt hus!!

Han ställde sig 2 meter ifraan mig och psykade mig ett tag.Han kröp sen under diskbänken.

Jag har nu köpt kackelackaspray.Det ska honom nog faa att förstaa att det är jag som betalar hyran här!

In einem dramatischen Finale gewinnt Riehen den Vizemeistertitel, das beste Ergebnis der Klubgeschichte. Da Réti gegen Reichenstein auf Verlust stand und auch gegen Genf viel Glück benötigte, war der Titel für uns zum Greifen nahe.

Dass alle Mannschaften mit Titelchancen bestmöglich antreten würden, war von Anfang an klar. Wir erledigten unsere Aufgabe gegen Echallens ohne grössere Probleme. Réti hingegen zeigte sich gegen Reichenstein nervös und geriet unter Druck. Nur dank einem groben Fehler von Riff und zu wenig Selbstvertrauen vom Wirthensohn konnten sie sich ins Unentschieden retten. Dies hätte die Vorentscheiddung zu unseren Gunsten sein können, doch die Spannung verschob sich somit eher erwartungsgemäss auf die Schlussrunde.

Wir bekundeten gegen Lausanne mehr Mühe als erwartet. Ralph Buss geriet in eine etwas nachteilige Stellung, konnte sich jedoch im Endspiel retten. Dass Jörg Hickl früher oder später gewinnen würde, war zu erwarten. Doch da unterlief Sebastian plötzlich ein folgenschwerer Fehler und er geriet auf die Verliererstrasse. Dank dem mühsam erarbeiteten „Pflichtsieg“ von Bela Toth am letzten Brett gelang noch ein knapper Sieg. Dies hätte eigentlich zum Titel reichen müssen, stand doch mittlerweile Genf besser gegen Réti. Die Frage stelle sich, ob ein 4-4 resultieren würde oder ob Genf knapp gewinnen könne. Doch wie es so geht: In der Zeitnot: griff Miralles im 40. Zug (!) fehl, sonst hätte er seine Partie gegen Milov niemals verloren. Und Landenbergue liess sich in einer haltbaren Stellung immer mehr zurückdrängen, nach mehr als 6 Stunden Kampf entschied seine Niederlage den Titel. Bitter für Genf, das dadurch noch aus den Medaillenrängen fiel.

Trotz dem knapp verpassten Meistertitel darf für Riehen die Saison ruhig als sensationell bezeichnet werden. Vor der Saison hatte uns niemand zugetraut, dass wir um den Titel mitsprechen würden. Und ein Sieg gegen Rekordmeister Zürich, das darf sich sehen lassen! Sie hatten vorher viele Jahre lang keinen einzigen Wettkampf verloren, nach der Niederlage gegen uns waren sie so desorientiert, dass sie anschliessend gleich nochmals verloren…….

Es war die am stärksten besetzte Mannschaftsmeisterschaft aller Zeiten. Unter diesen Prämissen betrachtet ist der Vizemeistertitel noch wertvoller. Was hat zu diesem hervorragenden Resultat geführt!? Vor allem eine geschlossene Mannschaftsleistung. Dass Jörg Hickl eine sehr solide Performance abliefert, sind wir uns gewohnt. Doch dieses Jahr spielten auch Ognjen Cvitan und Nicolas Grandadam überragend.

Die Schacholympiade 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk (Sibirien)

Die durch die Organisatoren geänderte Charterflugzeiten sorgten im Vorfeld für viele rote Köpfe.

Vor Ort war dann aber alles bestens organisiert!

Das Wetter war wechselhaft, Erkältungen florierten.

Das Stadtzentrum von Khanty-Mansiysk war einzigartig und sehr stilvoll

Unsere liebe "Babysitterin/Betreuerin" Nastya alias Ananaska (Fraulein Ananas) löste alle (egal wie grosse oder kleine) Schweizer Probleme.

Die Frauen starteten ausgezeichnet mit 8 Mannschaftspunkten nach nur 5 Runden.Fielen dann aber zurück und landeten wie die Herren etwas unter den (nach Elo-Zahlen) Erwartungen.

Die Männer haben 50% von den Mannschaftspunkten erreicht, und landeten in der Schlussranglisteim mittleren Feld.

Die Abschlussfeier war organisatorisch fabelhaft. Es gab keine Wartezeiten und alles war perfekt !!

Nachher ging es zur Party. Gut besetzte Tische mit allem was das Herz begehrt.Alles was fehlte war der Kaviar. Sonst wurden wir aber so richtig verwöhnt.

Die Organisatoren in Khanty-Mansiysk haben eine ausgezeichnete Schacholympiade auf die Beine gestellt - viel besser als von einigen Leuten befürchtet.

Back in 1976 I had the pleasure of doing my military service in the Swedish army. I slept in a bunk bed beneath soldier Pakkaanen who one day stuck his head out and said

'Do you play chess Lightcastle?'

As I was Swedish vice champion that year I said that I did.

I took the black pieces and employed 'The Black knights tango', a system that Grandmaster Stuart Conquest had success with in the recent European Championship.

Soldier Pakkaanen, who had been on the offensive and had chased me round the board several times, suddenly spoke for the first time during the game.

' I don't see how to checkmate. Are you sure it's possible?'

'I don't know' I lied . I didn't see why I should enlighten him. Maybe he will want to play for big bucks later. Who knows?

There were another 5 or 6 soldiers in the room so Pakaanen asked them if it was possible to mate with king against king. Nobody knew.

So the game continued and he chased me round the board once more before finally deciding that the task was beyond his powers and proposed that we call the game a draw. Fair enough, I said.

Recently I got hold of this endgame video and after careful study I now know that it is a win and not a draw as I thought previously.

I am much relieved as for a third of a century the thought that I had lied to Pakannen had weighed heavily on my conscious.

And I am not even a catholic so there was no-one to ask for forgiveness.

Roland hat mich eingeladen, Euch waehrend den naechsten Tagen aktuell von der Mannschafts-EM in Novi Sad zu berichten. Ihr werdet taeglich auf dem Neuesten gehalten.

1. Tag 21.10.

Wir, d.h. Victor Kortchnoi, Florian Jenni, Roland Ekstroem, Joe Gallagher und ich, sind gestern Abend nach einer reibungslosen Reise gesund und munter in Novi Sad angekommen.

Yannick Pelletier wird heute Abend zu uns stossen.

Heute Abend wird die Eroeffnungszeremonie im Hotel Park stattfinden, wo wir auch logieren.

Moeglicherweise werden wir anschliessend auch die Paarungen der 1. Runde erfahren, wonach wir bzw. ich die definitive Aufstellung unseres Teams fuer die 1. Runde festlegen werde. Dabei muessen wir die Brettreihenfolge einhalten *Kortchnoi, Pelletier, Jenni, Ekstroem, Gallagher*, muessen aber noch bestimmen, wer nicht spielt.

Die 1. Runde startet morgen, dem 22.10., um 1500Uhr.

Liebe Roleksbesucher,
Die Spieler haben mir heute einen tollen Einstand als Coach beschehrt! 2,5-1,5 Sieg gegen die Ukraine!
Wir traten ohne Yannick Pelletier an, da sein Flug von Marseille nach Muenchen so viel Verspaetung hatte, dass er seinen Weiterflug nach Belgrad verpasste und erst heute anreisen konnte...Joe Gallagher hat ihn aber hervorragend vertreten.
Aber der Brettreihe nach...*aus dem Blickwinkel von mir*

Am 1. Brett zog Viktor Kortchnoi gegen Volokitin zu meiner Ueberraschung nach 1. d4 f5 2. Dd3 a tempo, wonach Volokitin einmal 10-15 Minuten ins Nachdenken verfiel...Volokitin baute sich danach aber gut auf und rang Victor Kortschnoi schon bald einen Bauern gegen etwas wenig Kompensation ab. Dabei geriet der Ukrainer aber unter starken Zeitdruck, in dem er den Vorteil nicht festhalten konnte und seinerseits in leichten Nachteil geriet. Kurz nach dem 40. Zug konnte er (Volokitin) ins Remis-Turmendspiel abwickeln.
Am 2. Brett habe ich nicht so viel mitbekommen, ausser dass Florian Jenni mit Schwarz in einer Spanischen Partie schon bald nach der Eroeffnung nicht mehr so ueberzeugend stand und bald einmal in ein schlechtes Endspiel mit je 2 Tuermen, ungleichfarbigen Laufern, Bauer weniger und sogar noch Doppelbauer abwickeln musste. Dieses Endspiel schien er aber besser zu verstehen als sein Gegner GM Efimenko....und nach einigen Ungenauigkeiten Seiten des Ukrainers konnte Florian das etwas glueckliche remis erzwingen.
An Brett drei wurde Roland Ekstroem mit Weiss von seinem Gegner GM Drozdevskij bereits nach 5 Zuegen aus seiner Vorbereitung geworfen. Es entwickelte sich eine recht uebersichtliche katalanische Partie mit leichtem Vorteil fuer Roland, wobei recht zuegig immer mehr Holz vom Brett verschwand. Die Remisbreite wurde dabei nie ueberschritten und so einigte man sich als erstes Brett auf ein Remis.
Am 4. Brett versuchte der junge Ukrainer GM Kryvoruchko Joe Gallagher mit einer fruehen Najdorf-Neuerung und einer aggressiven Koenigsfluegel-Attacke in Verlegenheit zu bringen. Joe konterte aber ganz geschickt und im Nu stand der unrochierte weisse Koenig seinerseits im Zentrum des Geschehens. Unter den vielen erfolgversprechenden Fortsetzungen waehlte Joe letztlich den Uebergang ins sicher gewonnene Endspiel...und da dies die letzte laufende Partie war, sicherte uns Joe somit diesen tollen Sieg.

heute war nicht unser Tag!...vielleicht haetten wir uns an *never change a winning team* halten sollen...

von Brett zu Brett...*aus meiner Sicht vor Ort ohne Compi*

An Brett 1 versuchte Victor Kortchnoi mit anspruchsvollem Schach einen weissen Eroeffnungsvorteil gegen den nimzoindischen Aufbau des Technikers GM Almasi zu erzielen...dabei dauerte es aber relativ lange, bis er rochierte, was in der Folge bereits einen Bauern kostete. Diesen Nachteil konnte Victor Kortchnoi in der Folge nicht mehr wett machen, obwohl wir Mannschaftskollegen uns im Turmendspiel mit Bauer weniger noch eine Weile gewisse Hoffnungen auf den halben Punkt gemacht haben.

An Brett 2 lief Yannick Pelletier in eine von seinem Gegner GM Berkes weit vorbereitete Variante (Nimzoindisch mit 4. Lg5). Yannick verbrauchte schon frueh viel Zeit, waehrend sein Gegner dank dem Zeitbonus von 30 Sekunden pro Zug sein Zeitkonto sogar erhoehte. Bereits im fruehen Mittelspiel sah Yannicks Stellung nicht mehr schoen und gut aus und er musste dann auch als erster seine Partie beenden...mit einer Niederlage.

Am 3. Brett lieferten sich Florian Jenni und GM Gyimesi ein spanisches Duell (von der Eroeffnung her), das die ganze Partie hinweg recht uebersichtlich verlief und die Remisbreite nie verliess.

Am 4. Brett ging Roland Ekstroems Gruenfeld-Vorbereitung gegen fruehes weisses g3 ganz gut auf. Sein Gegner mit Weiss, GM Ruck, konnte so nichts aus der Eroeffnung herausholen. Bei dieser Partie war ich als Coach ein erstes Mal gefragt, als Roland mich fragte, ob er, falls er das Gefuehl bekaeme, fast ohne Gewinnchancen leicht schlechter zu stehen, remis anbieten koenne...

schweren Herzens sagte ich ihm zu, obwohl die anderen Partien zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht besonders gut aussahen....nun, Roland stand in der Folge dann gar nicht schlechter und in ausgeglichener Stellung ohne Gewinnchancen wurde dann trotzdem das gerechte Remis vereinbart.

1-3 gegen Ungarn - leider konnten wir unseren Exploit von gestern nicht wiederholen. Morgen kommt es zum Kraeftemessen mit den Franzosen!

Liebe Roleksbesucher,

leider haben wir heute erneut eine Niederlage kassiert, diesmal ungluecklich 1,5-2,5 gegen Frankreich.

Am 1. Brett geriet Victor Kortchnoi nach einem Qualitaetsopfer von GM Bacrot bald in eine schwierig zu verteidigende und somit muehsame Stellung. Trotz aus meiner Sicht hartnaeckigem Widerstand musste er kurz nach der Zeitkontrolle die Partie aufgeben. Selber meinte Victor Korchnoi etwas enttaeuscht nach der Partie zu mir, dass er ohne Widerstand verloren habe *wohl etwas uebertrieben*...morgen aber will er unbedingt wieder dabei sein, um die Scharte (vielleicht einmal gegen einen Spieler deutlich unter 2700Elo) auszuwetzen.

Am 2. Brett opferte Yannick Pelletier in einer katalanischen Partie frueh einen Bauern, konnte dafuer aber den in dieser Eroeffnung typischen positionellen Druck (fast wie Kramnik) aufbauen. Nach eigener Aussage spielte er dann im Mittelspiel einen ungenauen Zug, wonach GM Fressinet den Bauern zurueckgeben und sich solide organisieren konnte, so dass letztlich ein Remis-Springerendspiel entstand. Diese Partie war als erste fertig.

Am 3. Brett hatten wir vor Ort die groessten Hoffnungen auf einen Sieg. Roland Ekstroem ueberspielte mit Schwarz GM Edouard in einem Damengambit und hatte zwischenzeitlich Turm und x Bauern fuer 2 Springer...Roland sprach von (unzaehlbar vielen Bauern). Weiss verteidigte sich aber geschickt und so war der Gewinnweg, den es nach unserer Meinung irgendwo geben musste, nicht einfach zu finden...

am Ende musste sich Roland mit einem Remis im reinen Turm gegen Springer-Endspiel abfinden.

Am 4. Brett spielte Joe Gallagher gegen den bekanntlich theoriegewaltigen 18-jaehrigen GM Feller 1. d4 mit der Begruendung, dass er sich nicht drei vier Stunden in der Vorbereitung mit allen Hauptvarianten in Najdorf und Drachen abmuehen wolle, um danach irgendwo ueberrascht zu werden - eine aus meiner Sicht ganz kluge Entscheidung.
Es entstand ein Damenbauernspiel nach 1. d4 Sf6 2. Lf4 nebst Zuegen wie e3, h3, Sbd2 usw., wohl genau das richtige gegen diesen Gegner, denn Joes Stellung wurde immer wie besser und nach der Zeitkontrolle sah das Endspiel mit dem Laeuferpaar gegen Laeufer und Springer, mit einem Freibauern (bei je zwei Bauern) und einem aktiven Koenig fast so vielversprechend aus wie Rolands Stellung. Leider fand auch Joe den Gewinnweg nicht...dafuer dann der Computer, als wir zurueck im Hotel waren.

heute blieben die raschen 1-0-Siege im Gegensatz zu den Vortagen aus...in der 2 Runde verlor naemlich GM Laznika (Tschechien) 0-1 ff. weil er 15 Sekunden zu spaet am Brett sass und in der 3. Runde verlor GM Delchev (Bulgarien) nach 1. d4 0-1, weil sein Handy nach ein paar Sekunden klingelte...

Zu unseren Partien gegen Finnland...*wiederum gemaess meinen Eindruecken vor Ort*
An Brett 1 missglueckte Victor Kortchnoi mit Schwarz die Eroeffnung gegen GM Nyback voellig. Nach bogoindischen Eroeffnungszuegen erinnerte mich die Stellung bald an einen geschlossenen Katalaner, bei dem jedoch die schwarzen Leichtfiguren denkbar schlecht und unkoordiniert postiert waren. Dies kostete in der Folge einen Bauern bei weiterhin schlechter Stellung und letztlich die Partie. Victor Kortchnoi meinte, dass er *die Eroeffnung schrecklich gespielt habe* und auch, *dass er wie ein Kind gespielt habe* und *nie Spiel hatte*, was wohl objektiv den Partieverlauf widergibt.
An Brett 2 spielte Yannick Pelletier mit Weiss eine schoene und souveraene englische Partie gegen IM Karttunen. Im Mittelspiel verlor sein Gegner zuerst einen Bauern, dann einen zweiten und im letztlich entstandenen Doppelturmendspiel hatte er keine Muehe, den ganzen Punkt einzufahren.
An Brett 3 war es fuer mich interessant zu sehen, wie sich die beiden Spieler eroeffnungpsychologisch verhielten. Von Florian Jenni wusste ich, dass er sich fuer diese Partie das von ihm eher seltene Skandinavisch gegen erwartetes 1. e4 zurecht gelegt hatte. Nun kam von IM Agopov aber 1. d4 aufs Brett, was Florian normalerweise mit Nimzo-oder Damenindisch beantwortet...nun, er dachte eine Weile nach und spielte 1...Sf6, wonach 2. c4 a tempo kam. Nun investierte Florian wieder einige Minuten, um dann 2...c5 hervor zu zaubern. Der Moment, wo offensichtlich auch sein Gegner aus der stundenlangen Vorbereitung geworfen wurde...auch er begann bereits im 3. Zug mit minutenlangem Nachdenken, ehe er dann 3. Sf3 zog...es entwickelte sich eine ausgeglichene Partie, die Florian eigentlich nicht verlieren konnte. Im Bestreben, mehr als ein Remis zu erzielen, agierte er aber nicht vorsichtig genug und musste Weiss die Initiative, dann einen ersten Bauern und nach dem erzwungenen Damentausch einen zweiten Bauern ueberlassen und somit die Partie.
Am 4. Brett bei Joe Gallagher gegen FM Luukkonen war das Brett schon nach wenigen Zuegen in Flammen...ich konnte die Stellung nach der Eroeffnung nicht beurteilen, Joe waehnte sich im Vorteil und sein Gegner sich auch, wie sich nachtraeglich heraus stellte. Gemaess Joe waehlte sein Gegner dann prinzipiell immer den kompliziertesten Zug, was Joe viel Bedenkzeit kostete. Er bekam die Stellung aber immer besser in den Griff, opferte die Qualitaet fuer ein paar Bauern und einem im Zentrum verbliebenen Koenig. Es resultierte letztlich ein Endspiel mit zwei Mehrbauern, das Joe gekonnt zum 2-2 verwertete.
Der erhoffte Teamsieg blieb aber leider aus. Morgen gegen Bosnien soll es endlich wieder besser werden.

endlich wieder ein Sieg! 3-1 gegen Bosnien-Herzegovina! Heute ist vieles fuer uns gelaufen...aber der Reihe nach, wie ich es vor Ort erlebt habe...
An Brett 1 konnte Victor Kortchnoi gegen den 100Elo weniger aufweisenden GM Dizdarevic mit Weiss gegen einen Igel spielen....und es gelang ihm ueberzeugend, den aus seiner Sicht sowieso minderwertigen Igel zu knacken, was ihm nach eigener Aussage natuerlich nicht immer gelingt. Erwaehnenswert ist, dass sich GM Dizdarevic stark unter Stellungs-und Zeitdruck stehend einzuegig Dh7 Matt setzen liess...wie seinerzeit Kramnik gegen Deep Fritz.

Emir "Napoleon"Dizdarevic fand sein Waterloo.

Interessant fand ich auch Victor Kortchnois Aussage, dass er die vorhergehenden Runden nicht zuletzt deshalb verlor, weil er sich in den letzten Jahren so starke Gegnerschaft wie GM Almasi und GM Bacrot nicht mehr gewohnt ist und er die Risiken, die er gegen solche Leute eingehen kann und darf, nicht mehr so klar einschaetzen kann, wo er - auch gemaess seiner Aussage - ja in letzter Zeit immer gegen Junioren, alte Leute und Frauen spiele.
Am 2. Brett hatte Yannick Pelletier mit Schwarz gegen IM Stojanovic 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Sf6 3. Sc3 e5 4. dxe5 dxe5 5. Dxd8 Kxd8 vorbereitet, also ein Spiel ohne Damen. Tatsaechlich gelang es ihm, die Stellung auszugleichen und mit dem Laeuferpaar gegen das Springerpaar zu spielen. Er lehnte ein fruehes Remisangebot ab, musste aber in Zeitnot trotzdem noch eine Remisschaukel zulassen.
Am 3. Brett spielte Florian Jenni eine Art Igel im Anzug, nachdem er in der Vorbereitung festgestellt hatte, dass sein Gegner IM Bogut x verschiedene Sizilianer spielt, praktisch nie zweimal die gleiche Variante...ueberhaupt wird mir hier an diesem Turnier bewusst, wie wichtig die Vorbereitung bei so hochkaraetigen Turnieren ist...z.B. verbrauchte GM Aronian gestern fuer seine 45-zuegige Partie mit Schwarz gegen GM Miladinovic nur 30 Minuten, waehrend er heute gegen GM Bacrot in der Moskauer Variante der Slawischen Verteidigung

in eine Neuerung reinlief und selber um den 20. Zug herum schon fast keine Zeit mehr hatte...zurueck zu Florian Jenni...in einer zumindest fuer mich als Aussenstehenden komplizierten Partie gelang es ihm, in Zeitnot in ein hoechstwahrscheinlich gewonnenes Endspiel mit je Dame, Turm, ungleichfarbigen Laeufern und 3 Bauern abzuwickeln...Sein Gegner machte ihm die Siegfuehrung dann noch besonders einfach, indem er ein zweizuegiges Matt uebersah...
Am 4. Brett ging die ca. 3-stuendige Vorbereitung von Roland Ekstroem voll auf. Er verzichtete auf seine beliebten Caro-Can und Skandinavisch, um seinen Gegner, FM Galic, mit der Berliner Mauer im Spanischen zu ueberraschen...und prompt wich sein Gegner von der Hauptvariante ab, was Roland aber nicht beunruhigen konnte, denn er hatte sich auch diese Nebenvariante angeschaut. Kurzum, Roland stand nach diversen Abtauschen sogar minimal besser und konnte es sich erlauben, ohne Verlustgefahr ein Remisangebot abzulehnen...so scheinbar locker (natuerlich steckt viel Vorbereitungsarbeit dahinter) mit Schwarz auszugleichen, ist natuerlich auch fuer mich als Coach eine Sache, die ich waehrend eines Wettkampfes sehr gerne zur Kenntnis nehme. Nun, der minimale Vorteil liess sich leider nicht ausbauen, so dass Roland spaeter trotzdem ins Remis einwilligen musste.

der zweite Sieg in Folge ist Tatsache geworden...und zwar sogar gegen die hoeher eingestuften Kroaten. Unser Team zeigte wie immer eine sehr kaempferische Einstellung. Wir hatten bisher kein einziges Kurzremis, wenn ich mich richtig erinnere.
Am 1. Brett spielte Victor Kortchnoi Franzoesisch, was von seinem Gegner GM Stevic mit der Vorstossvariante beantwortet wurde. Victor Kortchnoi packte eine neue Idee aus und opferte eine Figur fuer zwei Bauern, um aber dann anschliessend ungenau fortzusetzen und in eine seiner Meinung nach schlechte Stellung zu gelangen...ploetzlich hatte er aber vier Bauern fuer die Figur und auf meine Frage nach der Partie hin, wie er die Stellung beurteilte, meinte er *ich habe die Stellung selber nicht verstanden*. Aus meiner Sicht hatte sein Gegner aber vergleichsweise aktive Figuren, die es ihm erlaubten, das Remis zu erzwingen.
An Brett 2 spielte Yannick Pelletier mit Weiss gegen GM Kozul eine positionell fuers Auge schoene Koenigsindisch-Partie und konnte sich am Damenfluegel einen starken a-Freibauern (zudem Mehrbauer) erkaempfen und zudem den Koenigsfluegel gegen taktische Schlaege geschuetzt halten...in gewonnener Stellung bei knapper Bedenkzeit verlor er kurz vor dem 40. Zug jedoch die absolute Kontrolle ueber die Stellung, so dass sein Gegner ganz gefaehrlich in seine Stellung eindringen konnte...immerhin hatte sich Yannick die Moeglichkeit des Dauerschachs offen gelassen, was er leider in Anspruch nehmen musste. Ein verschenkter halber Punkt.
Am 3. Brett spielte Florian Jenni Franzoesisch gegen GM Saric. Er geriet wegen einem uebersehenen feinen Damenmanoever von Weiss in eine sehr gedrueckte Stellung (u.a. Th8, Dg8, Kd8 und passive Springer, dafuer ein solides geschlossenes Zentrum (Bauern f5, e6, d5 gegen weisse Bauern e5, d4)), konnte sich aber allmaehlich befreien und seine Stellung laufend verbessern. Gegen schaetzungsweise den 25. Zug hin hatte er seine Stellung rechtzeitig konsolidiert, um angesichts des Matchstandes (Joe hatte remis gespielt, Yannick stand auf Gewinn und Victor Kortchnoi unklar bzw. nach Gefuehl von Florian schlechter) einer Zugwiederholung auszuweichen und auf Gewinn zu spielen, was ihm letztlich gelang - eine tolle kaempferische Leistung. Da er als letzter fertig wurde, sicherte er uns den verdienten Sieg!
Am 4. Brett bereitete sich Joe mit Weiss intensiv (d.h. ca. die drei zur Verfuegung stehenden Stunden nach Bekanntgabe der Paarungen) auf die Rauser-Variante des Sizilianers von Jankovic vor, konnte es aber trotzdem nicht vermeiden, dem Gegner in eine Variante zu laufen, welche dieser gemaess seinen eigenen Aussagen vor vier Wochen bis ca. zum 25. Zug schon einmal gespielt hatte...es resultierte ein Doppelturmendspiel mit Mehrbauer fuer Joe, aber dieses sah nur auf den ersten Blick vorteilhaft fuer Weiss aus. Joe Gallagher bemerkte aber die Gefahr und musste das Remis durch Zugwiederholung erzwingen. Er war als erster mit seiner Partie fertig.

Apropos Zugwiederholungen...es faellt mir zumindest bei unseren Partien auf, das fast alle bisherigen Remis durch Zugwiederholungen nach vorherigem richtigen Kampf zustande gekommen sind...bei Roland Ekstroem z.B. mussten von den letzten sechs Gegner (inkl. SMM) fuenf das remis auf diese Art erzwingen...
Noch eine ganz andere Beobachtung, die ich beim Rumlaufen waehrend den letzten Runden gemacht habe...es faellt mir v.a. bei GM Aronian und GM Bacrot und auch den Aserbaitschanern um GM Radjabov auf...die sind alle staendig am Wasser und Cola trinken...und kaum ein Zug wird gemacht, ohne vorher einen Schluck aus dem Becher genommen zu haben...und da ich von unseren Spielern (insbesondere Joe, Roland und auch Yannick) das Bananenessen *gelernt* habe, werden wohl meine SMM-Mannschaftskameraden in Zukunft ganz schoen staunen, wenn ich nun ploetzlich mit literweise Wasser und mehreren Bananen zu den Mannschaftswettkaempfen auftauche...

unglaublich!...auch gegen die Englaender gewinnen wir 2,5 - 1,5!
An Brett 1 spielte Victor Kortchnoi mit Schwarz gegen GM Adams Caro-Can. Waehrend mir, Roland Ekstroem und dem heute zuschauenden Joe Gallagher die Stellung von Victor Kortchnoi schon bald nicht mehr besonders gefiel - GM Adams hatte ohne Damen auf dem Brett das Läuferpaar und freieres Spiel - hielten Victor Kortchnoi selber und Florian Jenni die schwarze Stellung fuer einigermassen ok. Bei beiderseitig noch etwa 15 Minuten restlicher Bedenkzeit offerierte Victor Kortchnoi remis, was GM Adams annahm. Diese Partie war als erste fertig.

Schlimmer war es für die Engländer nur in Hastings im Jahr 1066.

Am 2. Brett geschah ein Kuriosum...ohne es zu wissen, wiederholte GM McShane mit Schwarz gegen Yannick Pelletier (wiederum mit Weiss wie gestern) dessen gestrige Partie gegen GM Kozul bis zum 14. Zug. Diesmal konnte Yannick jedoch keinen Vorteil erzielen, liess aber seinerseits auch nichts anbrennen, so dass die Partie kurz vor der Zeitkontrolle in ausgeglichener Stellung remis gegeben wurde.
Am 3. Brett sah die Stellung und auch die Bedenkzeit von Florian Jenni mit Schwarz gegen GM Conquest schon bald sehr kritisch aus...ich hoffte zu diesen Zeitpunkt, dass entweder Yannick oder Roland die zu erwartende Niederlage werden kompensieren koennen, obwohl sie beide keinen nennenswerten Vorteil hatten...aber dann geschah das Unglaubliche...mit einer bewundernswerten Coolheit spielte Florian in komplizierter Stellung die letzten 15 Zuege vor der Zeitkontrolle im 30-Sekunden-Modus...er liess die Uhr 15 Mal bis auf unter 10 Sekunden (mehrmals sogar bis 2 Sekunden) ablaufen, und rettete sich auf mirakuloese Art in die Verlaengerung. Das entstandenen Endspiel mit Turm-Laeufer (Conquest) gegen Turm-Springer (Florian) war immer noch besser fuer Weiss, aber Florian fand weiterhin die besten Zuege, so dass am Ende sogar Conquest das Remis erzwingen musste und uns den Gesamtsieg ueberlassen musste.
Am 4. Brett sass heute unser Matchwinner Roland Ekstroem. Vor der Partie hatte er ein etwas ungutes Gefuehl, weil er sich bei der morgendlichen Vorbereitung etwas zu lange mit der katalanischen Variante 6...dxc4 aufgehalten hatte und somit fuer alle anderen katalanischen Abzweigungen etwas wenig Zeit hatte.
Am Brett umging er dann mit Weiss gegen GM Gordon geschickt mit 1. Sf3 Sf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 d5 4. Lg2 Le7 5. d4 die 4...Lb4+-Variante. Dann musste er aber mit dem geschlossenen Katalanen (6...c6 statt 6...dxc4) Vorlieb nehmen. Ca. im 10. Zug wich Roland von der Hauptvariante ab und prompt fand sein Gegner die Ausgleichsvariante nicht. Roland konnte einen kleinen Vorteil bis ins Endspiel (je Dame und Turm) behalten, wo er dann nach einem Bauerngewinn bald auf Gewinn stand und diesen auch souveraen verwertete. Auch Victor Kortchnoi hatte sichtlich Freude an der schoenen Endspielfuehrung von Roland.

Roland Ekstroem hat sich heute hoechstwahrscheinlich eine GM-Norm gesichert!
7 Partien bei einer Performance von Elo 2600 sind gemaess den Aussagen des Hauptschiedsrichters dafuer noetig. Bis jetzt hat Roland 6 Partien gespielt bei einer Performance von Elo 2676! - ganz super!...und da wir morgen auf Armenien treffen, sollte der Gegner (ev. GM Sargissian) so stark sein, dass selbst eine Niederlage, an die ich bei Roland in der jetzigen Form (und dazu mit Weiss) kaum glauben kann, reichen wuerde...

Zum heutigen Match gegen Serbien...die Siegesserie ist leider zu Ende...aber das heutige 2-2 gegen die gastgebende Mannschaft ist trotzdem ein Erfolg....

Am 1. Brett fand Victor Kortchnoi mit Weiss gegen GM Ivanisevic in einem Nimzoinder nicht richtig ins Spiel und stand bald einmal schlecht. Sein Gegner konnte bald offene Linien und schoene Felder fuer seine Figuren besetzen und Victor Korchnoi stark unter Druck setzen...die Stellung von Weiss sah auch fuer mich Hobbyspieler sehr unschoen aus und ca. um den 40. Zug herum musste Victor Kortchnoi aufgeben. Etwas enttauescht meinte er *bisher war ich mit meiner Leistung an diesem Turnier zufrieden...nach heute nicht mehr....ich habe schrecklich gespielt und brauche eine Pause...ich spiele morgen nicht*...wir werden sehen. Es wird auf den Gegner und die Farbe ankommen, denke ich. Um 2200Uhr treffen wir uns wie immer in der Hotel-Lounge zu einer Runde Bitter Lemon, um die jeweils naechste Runde zu besprechen. (inzwischen ist Armenien als Gegner bekannt geworden)...

Am 2. Brett schien Yannick Pelletiers Gegner GM Solak mit Weiss starke Geschuetze gegen den e6-Sizilianer von Yannick aufzufahren...Tf1-e1-e3-g3 und Taf1 bei spaeter offener f-Linie... Yannick lief mit dem Koenig cool von e8 nach h7, um erst anschliessend den Turm ins Spiel zu bringen. Eine Zeit lang hatte ich etwas Angst um Yannicks Stellung, aber er meisterte die Probleme souveraen und konnte durch Zugwiederholung das Remis erreichen.

Am 3. Brett hatten wir Roland Ekstroem, der uns den Match rettete. Gepuscht mit mehreren Bananen setzte er seinen Gegner GM Vuckovic in einem Gruenfeldinder (mit 6. Ld2 in der Hauptvariante) unter Druck. Die schwarze Stellung war recht passiv und Roland meinte nach der Partie, dass er nicht das Gefuehl hatte, gegen einen 2600er zu spielen...tatsaechlich schien die Partie wie von selbst zu laufen und mit einer schoenen Kombination konnte Roland die im positionell-aktiven Stil gefuehrte Partie sehenswert abschliessen.

Am 4. Brett kam bei Joe Gallagher die Rauser-Variante des Sizilianers auf das Brett. Die Stellung wurde bald kompliziert mit vielen taktischen Wendungen, mit denen ich mich nicht im Detail beschaeftigte. Gemaess den Aussagen von Joe hatte er zwischendurch einmal Stellungsglueck, indem er eine wichtige Variante zu spaet gesehen hatte, diese aber gluecklicherweise fuer ihn haelt. Gegen Ende der Partie forcierte Joe im Endspiel Dame-Laeufer-3 Bauern fuer Joe gegen Dame-Springer-drei Bauern das remis, was uns gleichzeitig mit Rolands Sieg das 2-2-Unentschieden rettete.

An Brett 1 ueberraschte GM Aronian Yannick Pelletier mit 4...a6 im Slawisch. Yannick verbrauchte ziemlich viel Zeit und entschied sich dann fuer eine Variante mit Damentausch...im Anschluss spielte GM Aronian ungenau und liess sich auf eine Stellung ein, bei der selbst ich dachte, Fritz wuerde jetzt diese Stellung fuer Yannick mit Weiss gewinnen...und tatsaechlich investierte Yannick nun einen Grossteil an Bedenkzeit (ich schaetze ca. 40 Minuten), um letztlich *nur* einen Bauern zu gewinnen um den Preis des Laeuferpaares, das dann doch als Kompensation angeschaut werden konnte. Dass in der Stellung allerdings mehr drin war, wurde mir dann noch bewusster, als Aronian entgegen seiner Art selbst dann mit angestrengtem Kopf am Brett sitzen blieb, als er gar nicht am Zug war....und tatsaechlich demonstrierte er im Anschluss an die Partie bei der Analyse die Gewinnvariante fuer Yannick...die Partie selber verlief anschliessend recht ausgeglichen...den Bauern gab Yannick gegen ein Remisendspiel zurueck.

Florian Jenni spielte am 2. Brett gegen GM Akopian eine verrueckte taktische Partie...eine Zeit lang sah es aus, als ob Florian im Angriffswirbel des Gegners keine 25 Zuege ueberleben wuerde...dann verzog sich aber der Rauch und als Kompensation fuer den Minusbauern hatte Florian den gegnerischen Laeufer auf a2 ausser Spiel gesetzt...als dann spaeter auch noch der zweite Laeufer von GM Akopian ploetzlich keine Felder mehr hatte, konnte Florian das Materialverhaeltnis zu seinen Gunsten veraendern...eine Figur mehr gegen zwei Bauern... und mit allerschoenster Endspieltaktik konnte er den 2700Elo-schweren Super-GM in die Knie zwingen...ich muss Florian noch fragen, aber ich koennte mir vorstellen, dass dies sein gewaltigster Sieg seiner Schachkarriere ist!

Am 3. Brett spielte Roland Ekstroem mit seiner bereits erreichten GM-Norm im Ruecken gegen GM Sargissian 1. e4... Er hatte die italienische Partie bis zum 14. Zug in der Vorbereitung auf dem Brett und stand ausgeglichen. Es entwickelte sich eine zaehe Partie, welche die Remisbreite lang Zeit nicht verliess...selbst bis lange nach dem 40. Zug nicht...das war die Zeit, als wir von der Sensation zu traeumen wagten, hatten wir doch beim Stand von 0.5-0.5 (Remis Pelletier-Aronian) eine Gewinnstellung (Florian) und neben Rolands Stellung auch diejenige von Joe Gallagher am 4. Brett, welche eigentlich nicht zu verlieren war....nun, Roland spielte dann irgendwo unmerklich ungenau, so dass der Druck GM Sargissians langsam offensichtlicher wurde...und Roland die Stellung nach langem Kampf aufgeben musste.

Am 4. Brett stand Joe Gallagher gegen GM Petrosian auch lange ausgeglichen. Mit moeglicherweise (zu) viel Kampfgeist versuchte Joe auf Gewinn zu spielen, was grossen Respekt verdient...waere seine Strategie naemlich aufgegangen, haetten wir wohl einen der groessten sportlichen Erfolge der Schweizer Schachgeschichte feiern koennen...leider ueberzog Joe die Stellung und musste ebenfalls nach grossem Kampf aufgeben...dies besiegelte die unverdiente Niederlage in diesem Duell gegen Armenien.

Fuer mich ist somit der erste grosse Event als Coach zu Ende gegangen. Ich habe eine sehr kampfstarke Schweizer Mannschaft mit einem grossen Zusammenhalt betreuen duerfen. Mit dem Resultat bin ich trotz dieser aergerlichen Schlussniederlage sehr zufrieden.

Die 10 Tage waren fuer mich eine eindrueckliche Erfahrung und haben mir eine tiefere Ahnung von dem gegeben, was Spitzenschach heutzutage bedeutet.

Ich verabschiede mich hiermit von diesem Blog. Es hat mir viel Spass gemacht, Euch taeglich meine Eindruecke von den Spielen zu schildern und etwas ueber das Drumherum zu erzaehlen.

Harmonizing the Laws of Chess in the Interest of the Players

The Power of the Arbiter in Today’s Chess Tournaments

The power of an arbiter to influence the course of a chess game has been steadily growing in the last few decades. According to the Laws of Chess that came into force on July 1, 2009, the rules of a competition may empower an arbiter to forbid players to draw their game (Article 9.1 a). From now on, if you have the possibility of a perpetual check on the chessboard, you will have to ask the arbiter’s permission before you are allowed to repeat your moves.
“Where there is adequate supervision” (Articles A3 and B2), the current Competition Rules are valid also for Rapidplay and Blitz. Imagine playing a five-minute blitz game, for instance in the tiebreak of an important tournament. In the endgame, you are testing your opponent’s defensive abilities, or, having less material, you try to win on time. At that moment your opponent stops the chess clock and claims a draw, whereupon the arbiter who may have a rating that is lower than yours by 500 points decides that you cannot win or do not try to win “by normal means” – as if winning on time were not normal in a blitz game. Or imagine your opponent makes an illegal move and pushes down his clock button. The arbiter intervenes at once, on his own initiative, stops the chess clock and tells your opponent to take back his move. True, you are given two additional minutes, but in the meantime your opponent has ample opportunity to examine the position, since adjusting an electronic clock is somewhat time-consuming. The same may happen to both players, up to twice in a game, whereupon the game has been turned into a nine-minute blitz.
The Rules Committee of FIDE consists of arbiters. An arbiter’s concern need not coincide with a player’s concern. It’s about time that chess players come forward and declare themselves to be independent and responsible human beings, perfectly capable of playing a game of chess without being under constant supervision, if only the Rules are clear and do not depend on an arbiter’s interpretation. It’s about time that the players take responsibility for writing the Rules.
Harmonizing the Laws of Chess in order to have a single set of Rules for all kinds of game is certainly welcome. However, rather than applying the current Competition Rules to Rapidplay and Blitz, it is in the players’ interest to apply the Blitz Rules of 2005 to long games and, additionally, to apply the so-called ‘Fischer time mode’ in the way it was originally proposed by its inventor: with a relatively short basic stock of time and a relatively ample move-bonus.
The way to proceed is simple: Each federation is entitled to be represented in the FIDE Rules Committee. The players in a federation, especially the title holders, see to it that their federation instructs their representative to defend their interests.
The wording of the harmonized Laws of Chess that are proposed in the following text may be amended in many ways. Their principal purpose is to serve as an instrument for putting forward the concern of the players by demonstrating that and how it is possible to harmonize the Laws of Chess in the interest of the players.

Harmonized Laws of Chess – a General Outline

Applying the Blitz Rules 2005 to Long Games

In harmonizing the Laws of Chess, the first step consists of applying the Blitz Rules 2005 to all games. The main advantage is that the game proper is left entirely in the hands of the players. The ominous Article 10.2 (claiming a draw when pressed for time because the opponent does not try to win or cannot win) is dropped. Players do no longer depend on an arbiter’s assessment of a position. The arbiter observes neither the chess clock nor the recording of the moves; he intervenes when asked to do so by a player, or when he notices that a player, having left his seat by the chessboard, is infringing the Laws of Chess.
In the absence of acute time-trouble, illegal moves will be rare to occur and rarer to be overlooked. So it is quite natural to apply the current Blitz Rules (Article B3 c) to all games: if a player makes an illegal move and pushes his clock button, his opponent is entitled to end, and usually to win, the game; an illegal move remains uncorrected if the opponent did not object to it in time.
The rule that concerns overstepping the time limit shall be even more strict than in the current Rules for Rapidplay and Blitz (see Article A.4 d): it is the exclusive right of the two players in a game to mention a flag fall, even when both flags have fallen. If both flags have fallen at the time when the chess clock is stopped, in general the game is drawn, independent of whose flag fell first. Nevertheless, no third person shall draw a player’s attention to the fact that both flags have fallen, since it is not impossible that the act of producing a checkmate and the act of stopping the chess clock overlap in time. If they do, a Basic Law of Chess has precedence over a Competition Rule.

Abolishing Time-Trouble

The second step in harmonizing the Laws of Chess consists of applying the ‘Fischer time mode,’ called ‘big-bonus mode’ in the following text, in the way it was originally proposed: the initially allotted stock of time is relatively short, for instance 30 or 25 minutes, and the move-bonus is relatively ample, for instance 2 or 1.75 minutes.
Setting a time limit is contrary to the elementary character of a game of chess. However, setting an ample time limit per move is much closer to the character of a free game of chess than having to make an arbitrarily determined number of moves in a limited period of time. The proposed rate of play will achieve that
- counting the moves is not necessary;
- recording the moves is voluntary;
- acute time-trouble is abolished;
- the art of the endgame is revived;
- players will be able to leave the playing area once in a while, even during the endgame.
Of course, recording the moves is still in the interest of a player since, in certain situations, having a record of a game is the only way of establishing proof. The main difference between being obliged to record the moves and doing so voluntarily is that a player is free to record the moves whenever he wants to, and the arbiter is freed of the burden of having to supervise whether and when a player is recording a move.
It is up to an organizer of an event to demand that a player, by participating, agrees to give the organizer a copy of the game or to let the organizer make a record of the game for publishing purposes. This is a business matter between organizers and players, rather than a matter of the Laws of Chess.
Moreover, applying the big-bonus mode right from the beginning of a game facilitates a player’s using an assistant to handle the clock. The player’s action of making a move and the assistant’s action of pushing down the clock button might overlap in time which would be to the player’s advantage. However, it is quite probable that a player who is unable to handle the clock is also unable to make and record the moves. Hence, since time trouble is abolished, it is no problem to demand that an assistant who is to handle the clock shall also make and record the moves. In this way the opponent is not put at a disadvantage and the arbiter does not have to adjust the player’s clock in what is, according to his entirely personal view, an “equitable way.”
The big-bonus mode may even have a further advantage: The initially allotted basic stock could coincide with the delay tolerated in arriving at the chessboard for the beginning of a game. The traditional injustice that only White loses time when both players are late could be eliminated by a new rule: when both players are late, both players lose time. The arbiter would correct the time of Black manually or, better still, electronic chess clocks could be furnished with an additional switch for the two modes ‘both clocks running’ – ‘one clock running.’

The Duration of a Game

60 moves commonly serve to estimate the average duration of a game. A stock of 30 minutes and a move bonus of 2 minutes seem to be a good solution when not more than one game is played in one day. Games of more than 120 moves are very rare. However, with an ample move bonus, a player will be able to apply the 50-moves-rule more easily than today; hence, games with a large number of moves might occur more frequently. On the other hand, the ease with which a player who is defending a draw can bear up to making 50 moves will often motivate an opponent to agree to a draw well before 50 moves are actually made, since he knows that he will not be able to win on time.

If the average duration of a rapid game should not exceed 30 minutes, a stock of 6 minutes and a bonus of 6 seconds, or stock of 10 minutes and a bonus of 5 seconds seem to be acceptable. Players who do not want to risk losing on time in a better position may prefer to play rapid games in the bonus mode.
In blitz games, a bonus mode with 2 minutes and 3 seconds comes close to usual rate of 5 minutes in the guillotine mode. Nevertheless, for fans of blitz games it may be more fun to apply the guillotine mode. Of course this is still possible under the proposed Harmonized Laws, since the Blitz Rules remain as they were in 2005.

BASIC RULES OF PLAY

Comment: The contents of the currently valid Basic Rules of Play remain unchanged with the exception of Article 4.1 (“Each move must be made with one hand only”). Article 4.1 is dropped since the physical execution of making a move is not a feature of the elementary character of Chess. The proposed new Article serves to avoid complications that may currently arise since one of the rules says ‘if the player touches a piece’ (Article 9.4), and another one says ‘before he has made his own move’ (Appendix B3 c).
Article 4 The Act of Moving the Pieces
4.1 a.b.c.d. The expression ‘making a move’ comprises various actions. The first action consists of intentionally touching any one of the pieces on the chessboard. After having removed a possibly captured piece of the opponent’s or a promoted pawn or both, the last action in making a move consists of letting go one’s own piece after having placed it on its target square. The statements that a move has been ‘made,’ ‘completed,’ ‘finished,’ and ‘executed’ mean one and the same thing: the last action in making a move has been performed. When the last action in making a move has been performed the move is made independent of whether or not a chess clock is used.By letting go of a piece that is standing on more than one square a move is not yet made; a move is made when the piece that was moved is correctly placed.

COMPETITION RULES

Preliminary Notes

The term ‘White,’ spelled with a capital ‘W,’ stands for ‘the player who is playing with the white pieces.’
The term ‘Black,’ spelled with a capital ‘B,’ stands for ‘the player who is playing with the black pieces.’
The expression ‘stopping the chess clock’ stands for ‘bringing the chess clock to a standstill: neither clock is running while each clock continues to show the time that remains at the disposition of the player at its side.’

Article 6 Precedence of Rules
6.1 If there is a conflict between a Basic Rule of Chess and a Competition Rule, the Basic Rule has precedence.
6.2 When two occurrences overlap in time, 1. a decisive position on the chessboard – a checkmate, a stalemate or a dead position produced by a legal move (see Article 5) – has precedence over any oral accord between the two players (see Articles 17.4 b and 18.2 b); 2. an oral accord between the two players has precedence over any indications given by the chess clock (see Article 17.4 b).
6.3 When a game is ended and the score of the game is established (see Articles 7.2 and 7.3), the score of this game will not be changed by anything that may occur later on.
Article 7 Scoring
7.1 If nothing to the contrary was announced in advance, a player scores - one point (1) for a game that he won; - half a point (½) for a game that he drew; - zero points (0) for a game that he lost.
7.2 If a game is ended because a player made an illegal move or completely used up his time and his opponent made a valid objection (see Articles 17.3 and 17.4), the result of the game depends on the position on the chessboard: If, starting from the position on the chessboard, the opponent moving for both Black and White, checkmating the player’s king by a series of legal moves - is feasible, the score is 0:1 in favor of the opponent; - is not feasible, the game is drawn.
7.3 If the arbiter declared a player’s game lost owing to a player’s infraction of the Laws of Chess (see Article 19.3), the result of the game depends on the position on the chessboard: If, starting from the position on the chessboard, the opponent moving for both Black and White, checkmating the player’s king by a series of legal moves - is feasible, the score is 0:1 in favor of the opponent; - is not feasible, the score is 0:½ in favor of the opponent.
Article 8 Rate of Play
8.1 A game of chess is played in one of two modes:a) the big-bonus mode; b) the guillotine mode.
8.2 The big-bonus mode consists of the combination of two factors: a) a basic stock of time, not less than 25 minutes in a long game [to be discussed], allotted to each player once for the entire game; b) a time bonus for every move made, not less than 105 seconds in a long game [ to be discussed], added to a player’s remaining stock of time as soon as the player has pushed down his clock button.
8.3 The guillotine mode consists of but one factor: a basic stock of time allotted to each player once for the entire game.
Article 9 The Chess Clock
9.1 A ‘chess clock’ is a mechanical or electronic device equipped with- two clocks, one for each player;- two clock faces or electronic time displays, one for each player; - two clock buttons, one for each player.
9.2 a.b. A clock button of a mechanical chess clock is in one of three positions: high, medium or low. A clock button of an electronic chess clock is in one of two positions: high or low.
9.3 a.b. In both kinds of chess clock, the two clock buttons are connected to each other in such a way that at a time when one of them is in the high position, the other one is in the low position. In a mechanical chess clock, when one of the two clock buttons is in the medium position, so is the other one.
9.4 a.b. In both kinds of chess clock, each one of the two clocks has its own clock button. In both kinds of chess clock, a clock and its clock button are connected to each other in such a way that the clock is able to run only when its clock button is in the high position.
9.5 a.b. The face of a mechanical clock indicates both the time used and the time not yet used by the player sitting at the according side of the chess clock. The time display of an electronic clock indicates the time that remains at the disposition of the player sitting at the according side of the chess clock.
9.6 a.b. The face of a mechanical clock is equipped with a flag that will fall every time the minute hand passes the 12:00 mark. In the time display of an electronic clock some kind of sign may appear and remain visible continuously once the time has been reduced to zero.
Comment: In an ideal electronic chess clock, the second display to reach a time of zero will also show this same sign continuously since, first, it is possible that the next bonus added will result in a time that is again above zero, and, second, when both clocks indicate a time of zero when a player notices it, it does not matter which one reached zero first.
9.7 a. An electronic chess clock is additionally equipped with- a switch with which to switch on or off the entire device; - facilities for selecting the desired time mode and its factor or factors; - a start-stop-button.
b. The start-stop-button will, - when pushed for the first time after the chess clock has been switched on, set running the clock under the clock-button that is in the high position; - when pushed a second time, stop the chess clock; - when pushed further times, alternately set running the clock under the clock-button that is in the high position and stop the chess clock.
9.8 A mechanical chess clock can only be used in the guillotine mode.
Article 10 Before the Beginning of a Game
10.1 a.b. The arbiter defines the playing venue which includes the playing area, rest rooms, refreshment area, smoking area and possibly other places. The arbiter sees to it that conditions in the playing area are satisfying and that the chessboards, chess pieces and chess clocks are prepared.
10.2 a.b. A mechanical chess clock is prepared for a game in the following way: 1. The two clock buttons are put in the medium position. 2. The hands of both clocks are put at 6:00 minus the allotted stock of time; when the hands of a clock will point at 6:00 and the flag will fall, the time on this clock will be used up. An electronic chess clock is prepared for a game in the following way:1. The chess clock is switched on. 2. The desired time mode and its factor or factors are selected; when a time display will indicate 0 minutes and 0 seconds, the time on the corresponding clock will be used up.
10.3 a.b.c. Directly before the beginning of a game, the chess clock is positioned at one of the sides of the chessboard midway between the players. If no delay in arriving at the chessboard for the beginning of a game is tolerated (see Article 11.4), the position of the chess clock is chosen by Black. If a delay in arriving at the chessboard for the beginning of a game is tolerated (see Article 11.4), the position of the chess clock is- chosen by Black, if Black is present;- chosen by White, if White is present but Black is not;- to the right of Black, if neither player is present.
d. If an electronic chess clock is used, the clock button of White is put in the high position in order to set running the clock of White when the start-stop-button will be pushed.
10.4 a.b.c.d.e.f. A player who is unable to use the chess clock may bring along an assistant who will take over the task of handling the clock. The player presents his assistant to his opponent and to the arbiter before the beginning of the game. A player’s assistant has to perform at least three, possibly four tasks that only he has the right to perform throughout the game. His tasks are: 1. making the move on the chessboard that the player told him to make;2. pushing down the player’s clock button and, specifically, doing so with the hand that he used for the last action in making the move; 3. handling the chess clock in any other way that may be necessary, but only when he is asked to do so by the player; 4. recording the moves if the player wishes them to be recorded. The act of pronouncing the move to be made is equivalent to the act of moving a piece as determined by Article 4 of the Basic Laws of Chess; specifically, naming a square or a piece is equivalent to touching a piece. A player’s assistant must not convey to his player any kind of information or suggestion in any way. As concerns abiding by the Laws of Chess, an assistant’s actions are considered the player’s actions except when the assistant is conveying or trying to convey information or suggestions to his player; in this case the assistant’s role is that of a spectator.
Article 11 At the Beginning of a Game
11.1 When, at the time scheduled for the beginning of a game, any possibly necessary announcements have been made, the arbiter signals the actual beginning of the game and the clock of White is set running - by one of the two players, or - by the arbiter or one of his assistants, or- by a representative of the organizers.
11.2 As soon as White’s chess clock is running, - it is White’s turn to make a move; - the chess clock remains positioned where it is, throughout the game; - both, handling and observing the chess clock are the exclusive responsibility of the two players; - no third person is allowed to touch the chess clock; - no third person is allowed to draw a player’s attention to the chess clock or to anything the chess clock is indicating; - the arbiter is allowed to handle the chess clock only when he is asked to do so by a player.
11.3 White makes his opening move on the chessboard whether Black is present at the chessboard or not.
11.4 a.b. If the organizers of an event did not announce in advance the delay that will officially be tolerated in a player’s arriving at the chessboard for the beginning of a game, no delay will be tolerated. Any player who arrives at the chessboard for the actual beginning of a game later than officially tolerated loses the game in question (see Article 11.4).
Article 12 Recording the Moves
12.1 a.b. Recording the moves is voluntary.Recording the moves is the responsibility of every single player.
Article 13 Using a Chess Clock
13.1 a.b. After having made his move, a player is allowed to push down the clock button on his side of the chess clock. When pushing down his clock button, a player has to use the hand that he used for the last action in making his move.
13.2 a.b. As soon as a player made his move, it is his opponent’s turn to make a move, independent of the position of the clock buttons. After having made his move, a player must always have the opportunity to push down his clock button, even if his opponent has already made his answering move.
13.3 Wishing to notify his opponent of something concerning the game that is being played, a player has to do so while his own clock is running, except when he is - addressing his opponent when the opponent is returning to the chessboard; - declaring that he resigns; - claiming that his opponent is or was infringing the Laws of Chess.
13.4 A player is entitled to stop the chess clock at any time if he has a cogent reason to ask the arbiter for assistance, for instance when - the piece a pawn is to be promoted into is not at hand, or- the chess clock is not working correctly, or - there is a communication problem between the two players, or- he wishes to object to his opponent’s infringing or having infringed the Laws of Chess in one of the ways listed in Articles 14.5 and 19.2.
13.5 a.b.c. In the absence of any evident defect, the indications given by the chess clock are considered conclusive. A chess clock with an evident defect has to be replaced by the arbiter.The arbiter uses his best judgement when determining the times to be shown on the replacement chess clock.
13.6 If the chess clock was stopped and the game is to be resumed, one of the two players or, in case he was consulted, the arbiter starts the clock of the player whose turn it is to make the next move.
Article 14 During a Game
14.1 a. Once the first three moves have been made by each player, there will be no correction of anincorrect - placing of pieces, - setting of the chess clock,- orientation of the chessboard, - allocation of colors.
b. A king that is incorrectly placed is not allowed to castle.
14.2 If a player notices that the preceding move made by his opponent was illegal at a time when he has already made his own move, the illegal move will not be corrected (see Article 17.3 a).
14.3 a.b. Whether or not a move is legal, once a player lets go of his piece after having placed it on its target square, the move is made; however, a player who notices that the move he made is illegal is entitled to correct it as long as he did not yet push down his clock button. In correcting his illegal move, a player has to observe the rule of the touched piece (Article 4).
14.4 a.b.c. A player who wishes to adjust one or more pieces on the chessboard has to do so at a time when his own clock is running. A player who, on the chessboard, inadvertently displaces one or more pieces or adjusts one or more pieces while the clock of his opponent is running is distracting and annoying his opponent (see Article 14.5). A player who has made his move may, before pushing down his clock button, adjust one or more pieces on the chessboard without having to say „j’adoube“ or words to that effect (see Article 4.2).
14.5 A player is committing a misdemeanor that calls for a warning by the arbiter if he: - pushes down his clock button before having completed his move;- pushes down his clock button with the hand that he did not use for the last action in making his move; - adjusts one or more pieces on the chessboard while his opponent’s clock is running; - offers a draw while his opponent is present at the chessboard and his opponent’s clock is running; - repeats the offer of a draw before the position on the chessboard has significantly changed; - requests a draw while his opponent’s clock is running; - makes an unwarranted request of a draw; - stops the chess clock for insufficient reasons; - performs, while using an assistant according to Article 10.4, one of the tasks that only his assistant has the right to perform; - distracts or annoys his opponent in any way.
14.6 a. If a player commits one of the misdemeanors listed in Article 14.5, the arbiter intervenes only when he is asked to do so by the opponent of the offending player.
14.7 The arbiter is present as long as at least one game is still being played in the playing area; he observes conditions in the playing area and is ready to - stop immediately any kind of disturbance; - expel from the playing area people who are disturbing, including players who finished their games; - assist a player who is asking him to do so; - penalize a player according to Articles 14.8 and 14.9, if he is asked to do so by the player’s opponent; - penalize a player according to Articles 19.2 and 19.5; - react to any unforeseen occurrences according to his best judgement.
14.8 If the arbiter, when he is asked to make a decision, is satisfied that a player is or was committing one of the misdemeanors listed in Article 14.5 and that the player in question does so or did so for the first or second time in the game that is being played, he gives the offending player a warning and informs him that his committing any kind of misdemeanour for the third time in the same game will result in his losing the game.
14.9 If the arbiter, on being asked to make a decision, is satisfied that a player is or was committing one of the misdemeanors listed in Article 14.5 for the third time during the game that is being played, he declares the game lost by the offending player.
Comment: Three warnings adding up to the loss of the game correspond to the currently valid Article 7.4 b which states that the third illegal move entails the loss of the game.
Article 15 The Offer of a Draw
15.1 Once each player has made his first move, a player may offer his opponent a draw at any phase of a game.
15.2 a.b. Making and answering an offer of a draw is the exclusive right of the two players in a game. Neither making nor answering an offer of a draw must be qualified by any kind of restriction.
15.3 a.b.c. A player who wishes to offer his opponent a draw is to do so while his own clock is running or at a moment when his opponent is returning to the chessboard (see Article 13.3). When both players are present at the chessboard, the correct time for a player to make an offer of a draw is the time between making his move and pushing down his clock button. A player who offers his opponent a draw while his opponent is present at the chessboard and the opponent’s clock is running is infringing Article 13.3 and committing a misdemeanour according to Article 14.5.
15.4 a.b. A player who is offered a draw by his opponent is expected to let the opponent know by a word or a gesture that he heard and understood the offer. If the two players in a game do not have any language in common, the player who is offering a draw is expected to do so by showing his opponent the symbol ‘(=)’ in writing or by making a clearly understandable gesture such as crossing two fingers in the form of the letter ‘x.’
15.5 a.b.c. A player’s offer of a draw, once it is made, cannot be withdrawn, independent of the moment when it was made. A player’s offer of a draw, once it is made, remains valid until it is answered by the opponent. A player’s offer of a draw, once it is declined by the opponent, is no longer binding on the player.
15.6 a.b. A player who is offered a draw by his opponent has to answer the offer, sooner or later, independent of the moment when it was made. A player who is offered a draw by his opponent while his opponent’s clock is running, yet before the opponent made his move, is entitled to postpone his answer until he has seen the opponent’s move.
15.7 A player answers his opponent’s offer of a draw in one of three ways: - he accepts the offer by a word or a gesture; - he declines the offer by a word or a gesture; - he declines the offer by making a move on the chessboard.
15.8 a.b.c. A player may answer his opponent’s offer of a draw at any time, independent of the moment when the offer was made. When a player accepts his opponent’s offer of a draw, the game is immediately ended, independent of the legality or illegality of the last move made by the opponent and of any indications given by the chess clock. When a player declines his opponent’s offer of a draw, the game resumes its normal course.
15.9 A player whose offer of a draw was declined by his opponent may repeat his offer only at a time when the position on the chessboard has significantly changed.
Article 16 The Right to Draw
16.1 There are two rules that give a player the right to draw his game, provided that certain requirements are met and the player chooses the correct moment to claim his right: a) the ‘50-moves-rule;’ b) the ‘rule of recurring positions.’
16.2 a.b.c. A player may claim his right to draw exclusively at a time when it is his own turn to make a move. In order to claim his right to draw his game, a player has to stop the chess clock. When a player claims his right to draw while it is his opponent’s turn to make a move, his claim is invalid; moreover, he is infringing Article 13.3 and committing a misdemeanour according to Article 14.5.
16.3 a.b.c. A player’s claim to draw his game, made at the correct time, cannot be withdrawn. A player’s claim to draw his game, made at the correct time, is treated in the way of an unanswered offer of a draw until the player’s claim is either acknowledged or refuted, either by the player’s opponent or, if he was asked to make a decision, by the arbiter. A player’s claim to draw his game, once it is refuted, is no longer binding on the player.
16.4 a. The 50-moves-rule In the course of a game, a player’s right to draw his game on the basis of the 50-moves-rule arises whenever the following requirements are met: 1. There is a position P which is the result of 50 consecutive moves made by both players. 2. During the 50 moves preceding position P, no pawn was moved and no piece was captured. 3. The position P - either is now, after the last move made by the opponent, on the chessboard, - or will be on the chessboard as soon as the player will make the move that he is now declaring to make next.
b. If a player’s right to draw his game on the basis of the 50-moves-rule is challenged by his opponent, the player has to be able to show his opponent an accurate record of - the last 50 moves made by the opponent and o either the last 50 moves made by himself,o or the last 49 moves made by himself and, additionally, the move he is declaring to make next.
16.5 a. The rule of recurring positions In the course of a game, a player’s right to draw his game on the basis of the rule of recurring positions arises whenever the following requirements are met: 1. There is a position P which is identical with a position that appeared at least two previous times in the history of the game. 2. The position P - either is now, after the last move made by the opponent, on the chessboard, - or will be on the chessboard as soon as the player will make the move that he is now declaring to make next.
b. If a player’s right to draw his game on the basis of the rule of recurring positions is challenged by his opponent, the player has to be able to show his opponent an accurate record of - either all the moves made by both players since the beginning of the game, - or the last consecutive moves made by both players that go sufficiently far back in the history of the game to establish the necessary evidence; on top of that, if the player declared a certain move to be his next move, he has to show his opponent a written record of his coming move.
16.6 a.b. Identical positionsTwo positions, P1 and P2, are identical, if the following four requirements are met: 1. In both positions, P1 and P2, it is the same player’s turn to make a move. 2. For every piece in position P1 there exists a corresponding piece in position P2, and vice versa. 3. If a pawn in one of the two positions, P1 or P2, is entitled to capture en passant, so is the corresponding pawn in the other position. 4. The two kings are equally entitled to castle. A piece in position P1 corresponds to a piece in position P2, if the two pieces - are of the same kind and color, and - occupy squares of the same algebraic denotation.
16.7 If a player’s right to draw his game is acknowledged by his opponent, the game is immediately drawn.
16.8 a. If a player’s right to draw his game is not immediately acknowledged by his opponent, the player and his opponent make a note of the position, of the player whose turn it is to move, and of the indications given by the chess clock; then they set up the position on another chessboard and check the player’s right to draw - either by replaying the game from the beginning, - or by going back through the history of the game, move by move, as far as necessary or as far as feasible on the basis of the existing records.
b. If the relevant section of the record made by the player who is claiming his right to draw - is complete and unambiguous, and - contains the required kind and number of moves or positions, respectively, the player’s claim to draw his game is valid.
16.9 a.b. If the opponent, having examined the relevant section of the game, acknowledges that the player’s claim to draw his game is valid according to Article 16.8 b, the game is immediately drawn. If the record made by the player who is claiming his right to draw proves to be valid in the relevant section of the game according to Article 16.8 b, and - the opponent does not have a corresponding record of his own, or - the corresponding record made by the opponent is not valid according to Article 16.8 b, the game is immediately drawn.
c. If the record made by the player who is claiming his right to draw is not valid in the relevant section of the game according to Article 16.8 b, the player’s claim is refuted, independent of the existence or the quality of the opponents’ own record of the moves.
16.10 a.b. If the two players do not reach an agreement, they are entitled to ask the arbiter to examine the case, to explain, if necessary, the Articles involved, and, if still necessary, to make a decision.The arbiter must not intervene unless he is asked to do so by a player.
16.11 a.b. If a player’s claim to draw his game is refuted, the game resumes its normal course and the clock of the claimant is set running again, either by one of the two players or, if he was asked to make a decision, by the arbiter. If, in claiming his right to draw, a player declared a certain move to be his next move, the game is resumed by the player making on the chessboard the move that he declared to make next.
Article 17 Ending a Game Without Making a Move
17.1 a.b.c. Any player who is late in arriving at the chessboard for the beginning of a game loses his game and scores 0 points (see Article 11.4). The opponent of a player who is late scores 1 point if he is present at the chessboard in time. If both players are late, the score of the game is 0:0.
17.2 a.b. A player may resign at any time. A player who resigns scores 0 points and his opponent scores 1 point, independent of any indications given by the chess clock (see Article 6.2).
17.3 a.b.c. When a player’s opponent made an illegal move and pushed down his clock button, then, before completing his own move, the player is entitled to stop the chess clock and declare the game ended (see Articles 14.2 and 14.5 c). If a player objects to an illegal move made by his opponent, stopping the chess clock at the correct time, and if the opponent’s move actually is illegal, the game is ended; the result of the game depends on the position on the chessboard (see Article 7.2). If a player objects to an illegal move made by his opponent and stops the chess clock, yet the opponent’s move proves to be legal, the game is resumed; moreover, the player has committed a misdemeanour according to Article 14.5 and the arbiter, if called, gives the player a warning.
17.4 a.b.c. When a player’s clock is showing a time of zero or less, his opponent is entitled to stop the chess clock, independent of whose clock is running, whereupon the game is definitely ended. If the opponent, having stopped the chess clock, has a time of more than zero on his own clock, and if the game has not yet been ended by a decisive position, by an agreement between the two players, or by a player’s declaration that he resigns (see Article 6.2), the result of the game depends on the position on the chessboard (see Article 7.2). If, when the chess clock was stopped, both clocks are showing a time of zero or less, and if the game has not yet been ended by a checkmate position or a player’s declaration that he resigns (see Article 6.2), the game is drawn.
d. It is the exclusive right of the two players in a game to comment on the indications given by the chess clock; no third person shall ever draw a player’s attention to the chess clock.
Article 18 Ending a Game by a Making a Move
18.1 A game is ended as soon as a checkmate, or a stalemate, or a dead position has arisen on the chessboard as the result of a legal move (see Article 5).
18.2 a.b. At a time when the chess clock is standing still, a player is not allowed to start making a move. If there is any doubt about which was the first action, starting to make a move or stopping the chess clock, the two actions shall be considered overlapping in time; the move shall be completed and the effect of the move has precedence over any other factors (see Article 6.2).
Article 19 Decisions made by the Arbiter
19.1 a.b. The arbiter makes his decisions concerning the actions listed in Articles 19.2 a, 19.2 b, 19.5, and 19.7 b independent of having or not having been asked to do so by a player. The arbiter is the only person who is empowered to give a player a warning, to declare a player’s game lost, and to expel a player from an event.
19.2 a. A player whose game is still going on shall not - leave the playing venue without the arbiter’s permission (see Article 10.1 a); - leave the playing area without the arbiter’s permission in a period when it is the player’s turn to make a move and he has seen the last move made by his opponent;- allow any kind of electronic device of his to produce any kind of sound; - make use of any kinds of note, source of information or advice; - analyse on another chessboard; - discuss his own game with others.
b. Independent of having or not having finished his game, a player shall not - refuse to abide by the Laws of Chess; - commit any offense to basic sportsmanship.
c. In the absence of extenuating circumstances, the arbiter declares a player’s game lost if the game is not yet finished and it is established beyond any doubt that the player is or was guilty of one or more of the actions listed in Articles 19.2 a and 19.2 b.
Comment: As concerns electronic devices, it would be more to the point to demand that a player leave all his electronic devices by the chessboard or with the arbiter when he is going to the restroom since it is not the noise that is disquieting, but the possibility of consulting a chess computer. The noise could be considered a misdemeanor, listed in Article 14.5
19.3 If the arbiter declares a player’s game lost, the score of the game depends on the position on the chessboard (see Article 7.3).
19.4 Whoever notices that a player is performing one of the actions listed in Articles 19.2 a and 19.2 b may inform the arbiter or one of his assistants and no one else.
19.5 The arbiter is entitled to expel a player from an event for committing or having committed a serious offense to basic sportsmanship, or for having repeatedly performed one or more of the actions listed in Articles 19.2 a and 19.2 b.
19.6 a.b. If the arbiter declares a player’s game lost or expels a player from an event, he informs the player that, and how, and until when he is entitled to appeal against the arbiter’s decision. The only kind of appeal that a player is entitled to make is an appeal based on the interpretation of the Laws of Chess.
19.7 a.b. Unusual circumstances entitle the arbiter to make unusual decisions.On his own initiative, the arbiter is entitled, for instance, to - interrupting a game because of external disturbances; - award either or both players of a game additional time because of external disturbances.
c. On a well founded request by a player, the arbiter is entitled, for instance, to - postpone a game; - allow a player to switch on his mobile phone in the vibrating mode; - make special seating arrangements for a handicapped player.
Article 20 Extraneous Evidence
20.1 a.b. In a chess competition, informing the spectators about the games being played by using electronic chessboards and chess clocks that are capable of transmitting information to monitors and screens is permitted. Though using monitors, screens and demonstration chessboards is permitted in the playing area, a player who is making any kind of request or objection may not rely solely on information displayed for the benefit of spectators.
Article 21 After the End of a Game
21.1 a.b. A player who recorded his game enters the score of his game on his score sheet and adds his signature.A player whose opponent recorded the game checks the score entered on the opponent’s score sheet and signs the opponent’s score sheet.
21.2 Both players are equally responsible for letting the arbiter know the score of their game,- either by giving him their records of the game or easily legible copies of their records, having added the score of their game and their signatures, - or by entering the score of their game in a list provided by the arbiter,- or by doing both.

APPENDICES

The currently valid Appendices A (Rapidplay), B (Blitz), and D (Quickplay finishes where no arbiter is present in the venue) are dropped. The currently valid Appendix C is turned into Appendix A, E into B, and F into C.
